Balloon Riding in Myanmar

Now visitors to Myanmar can view what Marco Polo described as 'one of the finest sights in the world' - from the unique and enchanting platform of a hot air balloon basket. The magic of Bagan has inspired visitors for many centuries. One of the most remarkable sights in Asia, ancient temples dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. Now 'Balloons over Bagan' affords visitors a unique opportunity to see this ancient kingdom as it has never been seen before. Our champagne flights take place early in the morning, at sunrise or an hour or so before sunset. Light winds and stable weather conditions are needed, the speed of the balloon and the length of the flight are governed by the strength and velocity of the wind. Ordinarily an average of 45 mins of flight duration is expected. However, the entire experience will last about 2 1/2 hours. On landing, our fully trained Myanmar ground crew will pack the balloon whilst passengers enjoy a glass or two of celebratory champagne. Balloons over Bagan is a private Myanmar company that is committed to the preservation of Bagan and its environment. A contribution from each flight will be donated to community programmes that directly benefit the local population. balloon02balloon03balloon04balloon05balloon06balloon07balloon08balloon09balloon10balloon11 What type of balloons will be used for the flights? The Balloons and all aircraft equipment have been supplied new to 'Balloons over Bagan' by 'Cameron Balloons' of Bristol, England, the 'world's largest and finest balloon manufacturer'. The balloons are custom made for 'Balloons over Bagan' to the highest standards of the British aerospace industry. The normal passenger load will at present be limited to a maximum of fourteen per flight. Who can fly? There are no age restrictions. Passengers should be fit enough to climb in and out of the basket and be able to stand for about an hour. Young children, the disabled and pregnant women may have to be restricted to very calm weather conditions. Is it safe? Yes, very safe. Our company is fully licensed and approved by the Department of Aviation of Myanmar to operate a passenger balloon service in the area. All pilots currently engaged by the company each hold UK Commercial Pilots licenses for hot-air balloons. What should I wear? Long sleeve clothing and trousers made of natural fibres are most suitable. High -heeled shoes should not be worn, while comfortable outdoor shoes or boots are recommended. As the balloon moves with the wind, there is no chill factor. A light sweater will be enough for the cool mornings and early evenings in Bagan. May I bring a camera? The balloon basket provides an excellent platform for photography, with unrestricted views of the whole of Bagan Valley. High speed film (ASA 400 should be sufficient) is highly recommended. Cameras and any other valuables will have to be stored in the safety pouches just before landing. Do I need a head for heights? The short answer is no. A balloon does not sway or tilt in flight so you will feel very secure. What about insurance? "Balloons over Bagan" is fully insured with US$2,000,000 third party and passenger liability, reinsured through Lloyds of London.
